Blanche Ely High School is a high school located in Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida. The school is named for Blanche Ely, former principal and social activist. [2] In addition to Pompano Beach, Ely serves a portion of Deerfield Beach and a portion of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. [3] [4] [5]
The school was later renamed for her. She was behind four new schools, and recommended principals and names for them: Pompano Migrant School (aka Golden Acres), Coleman Elementary School, Markham Elementary School, and Sanders Park Elementary School. She retired in 1970, "when a federal desegregation order closed the [Blanche Ely] high school."
Blanche Ely High School (formerly Blanche Ely Negro High, and before that Pompano Colored School), where she was principal for many years, was named for her. The city has owned the house since 1997. The museum opened briefly in 2000, but closed in 2007. [ 1 ]
Alston is an alum of Blanche Ely High School, where Smiley had been a principal. Torey Alston, District 2, hugs Dr. Earlean Smiley before she swore him in to the Broward School Board on Aug. 30, 2022.
The school district held a forum at Fort Lauderdale High on Feb. 8, another at J.P. Taravella High in Coral Springs on Feb. 15 and the last at Charles W. Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines on Thursday.
