Carnival glass originated as a glass called 'Iridill', produced beginning in 1908 by the Fenton Art Glass Company (founded in 1905). Iridill was inspired by the fine blown art glass of such makers as Tiffany and Steuben , but did not sell at the anticipated premium prices and was subsequently discounted.

The most common Northwood maker mark was an underlined capital N centered inside of a circle. [13] [14] Not all pieces carry the mark but it is seen most often on carnival glass items. L.G. Wright also used a mark like it, but was forced to stop using it. [13]

The Dugan glass company was founded by Thomas Dugan, a cousin of Harry Northwood. [1] About 1904 Dugan along with his partner W. G. Minnemayer bought the closed Northwood factory in Indiana, PA and opened it as the Dugan glass company. [1] In 1912 a machine fire destroyed many of the molds being used. [2]
