The hongi (Māori pronunciation:) is a traditional Māori greeting performed by two people pressing their noses together, often including the touching of the foreheads. [1] The greeting is used at traditional meetings among Māori people, [2] and at major ceremonies, such as a pōwhiri. [3] It may be followed by a handshake. [3]

Historically the skin was carved by uhi [6] (chisels), rather than punctured as in common contemporary tattooing; this left the skin with grooves rather than a smooth surface.
This includes exchanging greetings, paying tribute to the dead (especially those who have most recently died), and referring to the reason for the groups' coming together. It has an important function in building connections between tangata whenua and manuhiri (guests), and setting the agenda for the gathering.
