Meliá Hotels International, S.A. (formerly Sol Meliá) is a Spanish hotel chain.Sol was founded by Gabriel Escarrer Juliá in 1956 in Palma de Mallorca and Meliá was founded by José Meliá Sinisterra (1911–1999).
Since 1895, the hotel had been in the Melia family for four generations, doing business under the corporate name Hotel Melia, Inc., but in July 2013, the hotel was bought by Prime Holdings Group, a Ponce investment group headed by Abel Misla, the dean of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico School of Architecture.
Gabriel Escarrer Julià was born on 14 February 1935 in Porreres, Mallorca. [1] [2] He was the founder and chairman of Meliá Hotels International. [3] In September 2024, he was awarded the Premio Empresario del Año (Entrepreneur of the Year) in the Premios Vanguardia. [4] He had six children, and lived in Mallorca, Spain. [3]

The Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe is a luxury 5-star hotel in Marbella, Spain. [1] Its three restaurants serve Spanish cuisine ; chef Dani García has received some international recognition. [ 2 ] In 1974 the hotel was described as having a "private beach" and "elegant decor".
