It was founded on 28 August, 2008 as Real Garcilaso, changing their name to Cusco FC in 2019.
Celaya was established as a football club on 7 February 1954 as Celaya Fútbol Club, A.C. by Miguel Iriarte Montes, the first club president. Celaya registered in the Segunda División Profesional, which at that time it was the second most important league in Mexico.
The stadium had long been planned as the Tiburones had been playing in Estadio Universitario de Caracas, which is not located in La Guaira, sharing games there with the Leones del Caracas. The stadium was originally going to be called Estadio Carlos "Café" Martínez after the baseball player born in La Guaira who also played for the team.
