Of the 81 dams, the Kerala State Electricity Board owns 59 dams which form 45 reservoirs, the Kerala Irrigation Department owns 20 dams which form 20 reservoirs and the Kerala Water Authority vests the control of 2 dams with 2 reservoirs. Chenkulam Dam is a gravity dam located on the Muthirapuzha river in Vellathooval panchayat of Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. [1] It spans 144.50 metres (474.1 ft) long and stands 26.82 metres (88.0 ft). [ 1 ]
This project is situated in Idukki District and its underground power house is located at Moolamattom which is about 43 km (27 mi) from the dam. It is notable that the Idukki arch dam does not have any shutters. The reservoir water level is maintained by the shutters in the Cheruthoni dam. [7]
Reservoir water spread. The reservoir created behind the dam has a gross storage capacity of 70.83 million cubic meter at a Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of EL 97.54 m. The live storage between the FRL and Minimum Draw Down Level (MDDL) of EL 77.42 m is 69.23 million cubic meter. The Dead Storage in the reservoir is 11.32 million cubic meter.
The maximum storage capacity of the dam is 253 feet. The water level in the dam is reported to the powerhouse at Karimanal every half an hour. The Hydroelectric Project was launched on 27 September 1997, to generate 180 MW of electricity using 3 turbines with a capacity of 60 MW. Kerala State Electricity Board is overseeing the dam.
