In March 2012, LaFontaine coached his son and a group of teenagers from Long Island, to the U-16 National Championship in Buffalo, New York. The Long Island Royals became just the second youth hockey team from Long Island to ever win a national championship.

Since 2018-2019 the surviving LSL teams have competed in the Ligue Hockey Metropolitaine Junior AA (LHMJAA). Two teams remain: the Dollard-des-Ormeaux Vipers and Vaudreuil Mustangs (Trois-Lacs Aigles). The league champion competes for the Coupe Dodge, the annual Junior AA championship in Quebec.
