Vauxhall Ellesmere Port is a motor vehicle assembly plant, located in the town of Ellesmere Port, in Cheshire West & Chester, United Kingdom. It has always built small/medium Vauxhall/Opel vehicles, including the Vauxhall Viva and Opel/Vauxhall Astra. It is owned by the global car manufacturer Stellantis.
Ellesmere Port is on the south eastern edge of the Wirral Peninsula, six miles (ten kilometres) north of Chester, on the bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. The town had a population of 61,090 in the 2011 census. [2] Ellesmere Port also forms part of the wider Birkenhead urban area, which had a population of 325,264 in 2011. [3]
The cinema was built for the Ellesmere Port Picture Palace Company, closing in about 1968, and then converted into a bingo hall. It is constructed in brick, which is pebbledashed at the front. Inside is a small foyer, and a double-height auditorium with a balcony. [12]
The town of Ellesmere Port had been a municipal borough from 1955 to 1974 with a borough council. A museum, which was called the North West Museum of Inland Navigation, was founded at the disused port in the 1970s. It was later renamed The Boat Museum and then, until 2012, the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. [1] [2] In the 1990s, The Waterways Trust took on the management of the National Waterways Museum.
It had over 20,000 students at its two main campuses in Ellesmere Port and Chester as well as in workplaces and community venues. In March 2017 it was merged with South Cheshire College , based in Crewe , to form Cheshire College – South & West , which as of 2020 retains the Ellesmere Port and Chester campuses.
