Matson, Inc., is an American shipping and navigation services company headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. Founded in 1882, [ 2 ] Matson, Inc.'s subsidiary Matson Navigation Company provides ocean shipping services across the Pacific to Hawaii, Alaska, Guam , Micronesia, the Pacific islands , China, and Japan.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported, on September 19, 2017, that Pasha Hawaii announced it had ordered two new vessels to be completed in 2020. [6] Per their report, a third shipping company, TOTE Incorporated, had announced that it too would be offering a service between Hawaii and the continental USA, competing with Pasha Hawaii and Matson.
In 1964, the company also bought out the interests in Matson Navigation Company held by three of its fellow "Big Five" competitors: American Factors, C. Brewer & Co., and Castle & Cooke. In 1969, the company purchased all remaining, outstanding shares in Matson and the shipping company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin.

Matson acquired the Oceanic Steamship operation in May 1926, extending its reach past Hawaii to Australia and New Zealand, [38] [39] and introduced the SS Malolo, the first of its four "White Fleet" ocean liners for Hawaii service, in 1927; [40] at the time, she was the largest passenger steamship built in the United States.
