Jewish Community Councils (JCCs) are a form of local Jewish organization with the purpose of safeguarding Jewish rights, and assisting local residents. [1] Jewish Community Councils were mostly formed in the 1940s.
In 1991 Councilmember Herbert Berman (D-Brooklyn) formed the “Jewish Study Group” to advocate for Jewish institutional concerns to the administration of Mayor David Dinkins. [2] In 2001 the group changed its name to the “Jewish Caucus”, and was chaired by Councilmember Michael Chaim Nelson (D-Brooklyn) from 2001-2013. [ 3 ]

In 1944, the National Community Relations Advisory Council (later renamed the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) was formed as an umbrella organization of 14 local JCRCs, the ADL, the two AJCs, and the Jewish Labor Committee, in the United States.
