The DeKalb County School System serves the rural areas and communities of DeKalb County, Alabama, with the exception of the schools located within the county seat of Fort Payne, which has its own school system.
DeKalb County is a county in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 71,608. [1] Its county seat is Fort Payne, [2] and it is named after Major General Baron Johann de Kalb. DeKalb County is part of the Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville, AL Combined Statistical Area.
The school district is overseen by the seven-member DeKalb County Board of Education. [3] The superintendent/CEO is, as of June 8, 2024, Dr. Devon Q. Horton. [ 4 ] The system educates more than 102,000 students at 138 schools with more than 14,000 full-time employees and 6,000 teachers.
