Fields of heliostat mirrors focus sunlight on receivers located on centralized solar power towers. The receivers generate steam to drive specially adapted steam turbines. For the first plant, the largest-ever fully solar-powered steam turbine generator set was ordered, with a 123 MW Siemens SST-900 single-casing reheat turbine. [22]
Unit 3 was a General Electric cross compound 3600/1800 RPM at 1050/1000 DEG F, with a 215 MW steam turbine. Unit 4 was a Westinghouse, cross compound 3600/1800 rpm, 1050/1000 DEG F 225MW. The boilers were Babcox and Wilcox Universal Pressure Boilers (called once thru) rated at 1,638,000 LB/HR. All four units were cooled using water sourced from ...
Doosan Škoda Power designs and manufactures steam turbines from 5 MW to 1250 MW of output, including combined cycle and steam tail applications designed to increase the overall efficiency of simple gas turbines from 32–45% to 60% or above. A 48" rotor at the last stage and an axial output combine to enhance performance.
In 2020, California had a total summer capacity of 78,055 MW through all of its power plants, and a net energy generation of 193,075 GWh. [3] Its electricity production was the third largest in the nation behind Texas and Florida. California ranks first in the nation as a producer of solar, geothermal, and biomass resources. [4]
They are combined cycle units, 50% more efficient than the other units, because they use two turbines: first, a pair of 170 MW gas turbines, then a 190 MW steam turbine, for a total of 530 MW each. When completed in 2002, the plant was the largest power plant in California by capacity, at 2560 MW.
The Westinghouse gas turbine used for that application was a supercharged model W301, nominally rated at 25 MW. The rating on the steam turbine was 85 MW, for an overall combined cycle plant output of about 110 MW, and the thermal efficiency achieved was more than 39%, the record for gas-fired power plants in the US for quite some time.
We’ll have what we all secretly want: A “free” source of power too far away to see. Too distant to have to think about. Until it’s too late.
The generated steam is let in a single steam turbine generator (STG) of 235 MW maximum. Resulting peak output is 635 MW gross. Under baseload operation, the output is 184 MW gross from each gas-turbine and 198 MW gross for the steam-turbine, adding to 567 MW gross of which 14 MW consumed by the auxiliary equipment, yielding a 553 MW net output.
