Kamuthi is known for being the home of the Kamuthi Solar Power Project, a large solar power plant. Kamuthi town is situated in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu . The Kamuthi town has a population of 14754, male population is 7416 and female population is 7338 as per the Census 2011 data.

The Kamuthi looting was an invasion of Kamuthi by Maravars from neighbouring villages on 17 September 1918. The looting ended with around 50 rioters being shot dead by the police and two policemen being killed. It also resulted in property losses estimated at Rupees 50,000. [1]
During his youth, Muthuramalingam Thevar was aided by Kuzhanthaisami Pillai, a close family friend of his father. Pillai took responsibility of arranging Muthuramalinga Thevar's schooling. First he was given a private tuition and in June 1917 he began attending classes at an elementary school run by the American missionaries in Kamuthi.
