Brigham Hall, also known as Grove Home, is a historic psychiatric hospital located at Canandaigua in Ontario County, New York. It is a complex of 10 buildings designed as a facility for the care and confinement of the mentally ill. The Gothic Revival style main building was built about 1855 and is surrounded by the contributing outbuildings.
VillageCare can trace its origins to their first nursing home on Hudson Street in Greenwich Village, New York. During the early 1970s the owner of the nursing home absconded with the funds. The state of New York intervened with the intention of closing the home and transferring the residents to other facilities outside of Greenwich Village.
On February 14, 1814, the Society for the Relief of Indigent Respectable Females, as it was first known, was established in New York City. The Society raised private donations, and gave clothing, small stoves, and food to elderly impoverished women "to relieve and comfort those aged females, who once enjoyed a good degree of affluence, but now reduced to poverty by the vicissitudes of Providence."
Consequently, on April 3, 1972, the 14-story Isabella Nursing Home building was opened. The combination of facility and program expansion in the next few decades helped to create the present day Isabella Geriatric Center. The 1990s once again called for changes and new goals; Isabella began a move to create a more home-like ambiance for residents.
In 1944, an effective drug, streptomycin, was developed, and by the mid-1950s, sanatorium treatment of tuberculosis was nearly entirely supplanted by drug treatment, although the New York state-operated tuberculosis sanatorium in nearby Ray Brook (started in 1904) was not closed until the mid-1960s. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.8 square miles (95 km 2), of which 36.7 square miles (95 km 2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km 2) (0.05%) is water. U.S. Route 20A (US 20A) passes across the town. New York State Route 64 (NY 64) is a north–south highway in the southeastern part of the town.
