Allama Iqbal Open University is a public university in Islamabad, Pakistan.It is named after Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the country's national poet.It is the world's fifth largest institution of higher learning in terms of enrolment, with an annual enrollment of 1,121,038 students (as of 2010), the majority are women and course enrollment of 3,305,948 (2011). In 1976, the Academy moved to 116 McLeod Road, Lahore, to the old residence of Allama Iqbal. The federal government of Pakistan made a gift of a piece of land from a major estate in Lahore, behind one of the Avari Hotels and opposite Faletti's Hotel , to build a state-of-the-art building named Aiwan-e-Iqbal , as a monument and memorial to Iqbal.
