The league was founded in 1992 as a non-contact juvenile league known as the North Central Junior Hockey League. The original two teams were located in St. Albert and Sherwood Park. The league added a team in Edmonton in 1993 on condition it would be a non-contact league.

The 2023–24 season began with 16 teams organized into 2 divisions; the North Division and the South Division. Following the announcement in January 2024 that the Blackfalds Bulldogs, Brooks Bandits, Okotoks Oilers, Sherwood Park Crusaders, and Spruce Grove Saints would join the BCHL in the 2024–25 season, the teams' remaining AJHL games for the 2023–24 season were cancelled.
The two largest leagues (Capital Junior Hockey League, Heritage Junior B Hockey League) send two teams each, the remaining three send one, while the host team is guaranteed a berth. Starting with the 2023 championships the format was revised such that only the league playoff champion is to advance plus the host city team.
The Wranglers also captured the Alberta provincial title. The Wranglers chose not to participate in the Keystone Cup tournament due to scheduling conflicts. During the 2011 HJHL finals Okotoks Bisons won the best-of-three series versus Blackfalds Wrangers 2–1, their eighth league title. Both teams advanced to the Junior B Provincials in Leduc.
The North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League is a Junior "B" ice hockey league in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) is an ice hockey championship established in Canada by the Aboriginal Sport Circle. The annual tournament provides an opportunity for U15 (Bantam) and U18 -aged Indigenous youth across Canada to compete for the NAHC title.
