The Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC; French: Association des femmes autochtones du Canada [AFAC]) is a national Indigenous organization representing the political voice of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations on and off reserve, status and non-status, disenfranchised, Métis, and Inuit.
Women also established and became involved with organizations to advance women's rights, including suffrage. In 1893, the National Council of Women of Canada was formed which was designed to bring together representatives of different women's groups across Canada, providing a network for women to communicate their concerns and ideas. [9]
It aims to end violence against women, move low-income women out of poverty, and empower girls. The Canadian Women's Foundation is the only national women's foundation in Canada. [1] Since 1991, it has invested over $40 million in charitable support to over 1,200 community programs and women's shelters across Canada. [2]
The purpose was to educate women about public issues and the reforms that were needed, and to provide a forum for discussion by different women's groups. [8] The title page described it as "A journal of education and progress for Canadian women." The monthly journal was modeled on successful British and American feminist periodicals. [9]
