According to the United States Census Bureau, the Town of North Providence has a total area of 5.8 square miles (15 km 2), of which 5.7 square miles (15 km 2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km 2) is water. Since North Providence is officially incorporated as a town, it maintains the distinction as the smallest town in the smallest state.

The Greystone Historic District is a historic district encompassing the early 20th-century mill village of Greystone in North Providence, Rhode Island.The district most significant elements is the Greystone Mill, a complex of brick industrial buildings on the North Providence side of the Woonasquatucket River, as well as the dam spanning the river and a water tank in Johnston.
The College Hill local historic district, established in 1960 (and expanded in 1990), partially overlaps the national landmark district. Properties within the local historic district are regulated by the city's historic district zoning ordinance, and cannot be altered without approval from the Providence Historic District Commission.
