The air national guard base occupies 153.3 acres (620,000 m 2) on the northeast corner of the airport. [6] The munitions storage area, which is physically separated from the main base, occupies 16.71 acres (67,600 m 2) north of Runway 09/27. Minnesota Army National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army. The same ranks and insignia are used and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. The Minnesota Guard also bestows a number of state awards for local services rendered in or to the state of Minnesota.
The division was created on 10 June 1946 as a National Guard infantry division from the efforts of Minnesota's Adjutant General Ellard Walsh. The division was built from scratch with veteran transfers and new recruits, mostly from Minnesota and North Dakota, under the command of Major General Norman Hendrickson.
