The USFS manages 73,300 acres (297 km 2) of the wilderness all within Inyo National Forest. [5] Wildlife in the area includes the endangered Inyo Mountains salamander and the desert bighorn sheep. [6] Plant communities include creosote and sagebrush at lower altitudes, and bristlecone pine forests at higher altitudes. [7]
The Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) trees grow between 9,800 and 11,000 feet (3,000–3,400 m) above sea level, in xeric alpine conditions, protected within the Inyo National Forest. [5] [6] Limber pine (Pinus flexilis) also grow in the forest.
The meltwater infiltrates to depths of a few kilometers (or miles), where some is heated to at least 430 °F (220 °C) by hot rock near the Inyo craters. The heated water, kept from boiling by high pressure, still has lower density than cold water, and it rises along steeply inclined fractures to depths of 0.3–1.25 miles (0.48–2.01 km).

Black Mountain is a 13,291-foot-elevation (4,051-meter) mountain summit located on the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in northern California.
