The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, non-profit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people in the Houston, Texas, United States metropolitan area to live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 9,000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of Greater Houston.

Henry Louis Hilgartner was considered the "founding father" of the Travis County Association for the Blind. he received his M.D. degree at the University of Maryland in 1889. He did advanced study in Baltimore, New York, and Vienna before he moved to Austin, Texas, in July 1891. In 1893 he was appointed oculist for the Texas School for the Blind.
The early 20th century saw a handful of blind students enrolled in their neighborhood schools, with special educational supports. Most still attended residential institutions, but that number dropped steadily as the years wore on - especially after the white cane was adopted into common use as a mobility tool and symbol of blindness in the 1930s.
COSB is a membership organization of special purpose schools for students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities.
