NX Newcastle, formerly known as the Carling Academy and the O 2 Academy Newcastle, is a music venue in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It opened in the former Majestic Ballroom building on 14 October 2005 as the Carling Academy, and was renamed the O 2 Academy for sponsorship reasons in 2008. [ 1 ]
The building was designed by Nicholas & Dixon-Spain [2] and opened in 1927 as a part of a development which also included the adjacent Newcastle City Baths. [3] It has since become a venue for orchestras, rock and pop bands, and comedy acts, as well as for celebrity recitals, talks and civic functions. [3]

All three concerts were to support the Teenage Cancer Trust's units at the Great North Children's Hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. [1] [6] In 2011, they performed at Langford Live, a benefit concert at Langford Court in South West England, with Ocean Colour Scene. [7] [8]
The first dates were announced by various news sources towards the end of November 2007. Initially, there was one date per venue, but the demand caused extra tour dates to be scheduled. In addition to twenty-four arena dates, Girls Aloud also performed eleven open-air concerts over the summer.

[8] Damage to the O2's tent, above the roof of the O2 Arena, caused by Storm Eunice (2022) On 18 February 2022 during Storm Eunice, large sections of the arena's fabric roof were shredded, causing the evacuation of 1,000 people, and the venue to close.

The group formed a partnership in 2008 with O2 to allow customers of the company to receive priority access to tickets at the venues. The deal saw eleven UK venues renamed O2 Academies from 1 January 2009, with O2 customers able to buy tickets to gigs up to two days before others. [ 1 ]
