COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina has set a Sept. 20 date to put inmate Freddie Eugene Owens to death in what would be the state's first execution in more than 13 years.
Originally, Owens's death sentence was ordered to be carried out on October 3, 2008, but the execution did not proceed due to the U.S. Supreme Court granting a stay of execution for Owens while pending an appeal. [25] [11] Later, Owens was rescheduled to be executed on January 9, 2009, but the execution date was delayed for legal reasons. [14]
By 2021, state lawmakers added a third option — death by firing squad — to force those on the state’s death row to make a choice so that executions could proceed.
Freddie Owens is scheduled to be executed at 6 p.m. on Friday, when he will be brought into South Carolina’s death chamber and given a lethal injection.
Owens must decide on his method of death, lethal injection or firing squad, 14 days before execution day. If he declines to decide, he will automatically be given the electric chair.
