AAUI is part of a system of Ethernet peripherals intended to make connecting over Ethernet easier. At the time of the introduction of AAUI, Ethernet systems usually were 10BASE2, also known as thinnet. Apple's system is called FriendlyNet. A FriendlyNet 10BASE2 system does not use BNC T-connectors or separate 50 Ω terminators.
An AUI cable can extend up to 50 metres (160 feet), though often the MAU and data terminal equipment's (DTE) medium access controller (MAC) are directly connected, bypassing the need for a cable. In Ethernet implementations where the DTE and MAU are combined, the AUI is typically omitted.
Apple Computer embraced the use of the encapsulation technology, which came to be known as MacIP. One of the mandates for the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) "IP over AppleTalk" working group was to document existing MacIP implementations and to develop a specification for MacIP that could be proposed as a standard. A bilingual cable allows the connection of older devices to the newer port. In 2003, Apple was the first to introduce commercial products with the new connector, including a new model of the Power Mac G4 and a 17" PowerBook G4.
The Apple Communication Slot, or Comm Slot, [1] is an internal expansion data interface (slot) found in Apple Macintosh computers from the early to mid-1990s. [2] It was designed as an inexpensive way to add communication expansion cards like network adapters or modems to Macs and Power Macs. [3] The slot exists in two forms.
An Ethernet crossover cable is a crossover cable for Ethernet used to connect computing devices together directly. It is most often used to connect two devices of the same type, e.g. two computers (via their network interface controllers ) or two switches to each other.
An Ethernet port on a laptop computer connected to a twisted pair cable with an 8P8C modular connector Symbol used by Apple and Google on some devices to denote an Ethernet connection. Ethernet (/ ˈ iː θ ər n ɛ t / EE-thər-net) is a family of wired computer networking technologies commonly used in local area networks (LAN), metropolitan ...
MDI to MDI connection with Ethernet crossover cable. To connect two ports of the same configuration (MDI to MDI, or MDI-X to MDI-X) with a 10 or 100 Mbit/s connection (10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX), an Ethernet crossover cable is needed to connect the pair that each interface transmits on to the receive conductors of the
