Steam turbine generator: The first commercial Westinghouse steam turbine-driven generator, a 1,500 kW unit, began operation at Hartford Electric Light Co. in 1901. The machine, nicknamed Mary-Ann, was the first steam turbine generator to be installed by an electric utility to generate electricity in the US.
In addition, Westinghouse produced and supplied electrical and traction equipment for Baldwin diesel locomotives from 1939 to 1955 and Lima-Hamilton diesels from 1949-1951 until production at Lima, Ohio ended with the merger into Baldwin. Fairbanks-Morse diesels also used Westinghouse electrical and traction equipment.
Westinghouse Electric was subcontracted to build 5,000 horsepower (3,700 kW) 25 Hz [4] AC generators, based on the work of Nikola Tesla and Benjamin G. Lamme, while the I. P. Morris Company of Philadelphia built the turbines based on the design of the Swiss company Faesch and Piccard. [3] The power plant went into operation on August 25, 1895.
It became operational in 1891 and was built by Westinghouse Electric around two of their large alternators. One was set up in the valley as a generator and driven by water. It was connected by a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) transmission line to the second alternator used as a motor up at the Gold King Mine to drive the mining operation.
