The following are not rules of English, no matter what someone may tell you. (Or, as Shakespeare might have put it: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your seventh-grade English teacher's handouts.) "A paragraph should have at least/no more than X sentences." (Nonsense.)
Misconception: Paragraphs must be at least three sentences long. Richard Nordquist writes, "no rule exists regarding the number of sentences that make up a paragraph", noting that professional writers use "paragraphs as short as a single word". [29] According to the Oxford Guide to Plain English:
A set of words with no independent clause may be an incomplete sentence, also called a sentence fragment. A sentence consisting of at least one dependent clause and at least two independent clauses may be called a complex-compound sentence or compound-complex sentence. Sentence 1 is an example of a simple sentence.
It is not usually possible to tell from the form of a word which class it belongs to; inflectional endings and derivational suffixes are unique and specific to. On the other hand, most words belong to more than one word class. For example, run can serve as either a verb or a noun (these are regarded as two different lexemes). [3]
This does not mean using fewer words is always better; rather, when considering equivalent expressions, choose the more concise. Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.
Various sentences using the syllables mā, má, mǎ, mà, and ma are often used to illustrate the importance of tones to foreign learners. One example: Chinese: 妈妈骑马马慢妈妈骂马; pinyin: māma qí mǎ, mǎ màn, māma mà mǎ; lit. 'Mother is riding a horse... the horse is slow... mother scolds the horse'. [37]
Frankly, many of the offences I help prosecute are little more than big traffic tickets. Seriously, the maximum fine for most offences is the same as the fine for driving 50 km/h over the speed limit.
This process will be sped up if creating sentences using multiple words from the list to construct sentences like "They think it is time to go" - "Ellos piensan que es hora de irse" in Spanish for instance. It is important to learn words in a given context and will make the words easier to remember.
