Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens is the only public botanical garden in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia specializing in Rhododendrons and Native Azaleas.The protected area encompasses 33.0 acres (13.4 ha) on land sloping to Lake Chatuge.
Blue Ridge is the home of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a restored railroad that features a four-hour, 26 mile roundtrip journey along the Toccoa River to the sister towns McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. [8] The original tracks started in Marietta, Georgia, and reached Blue Ridge and the surrounding areas in 1886.
The garden started on 200 acres (81 ha) of farmland and woodland along Yellow Creek Road in Cherokee County. Jim Gibbs purchased the land from Broughton Bannister in September 1980. Additional adjacent parcels were purchased by Mr. Gibbs over the years to reach the current 376 acres (152 ha), including 40 acres (16 ha) in Pickens County. [1]
Jordan built the great house, several outbuildings (including a smoke house and slave cabins), and laid out a formal garden. [2] After his death in 1856, the plantation was inherited by his son, Leonidas A. Jordan. [2] The plantation was purchased by Dr. L. C. Lindsley, a Professor of Chemistry at Georgia College, in 1930.
