Roy Claxton Acuff (September 15, 1903 – November 23, 1992) was an American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter. Known as the "King of Country Music", Acuff is often credited with moving the genre from its early string band and "hoedown" format to the singer-based format that helped make it internationally successful.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band included the song on their 1972 album Will the Circle be Unbroken; Roy Acuff took the lead vocal. Ricky Skaggs and The Whites recorded the song on their 2007 album Salt of the Earth, [8] and Merle Haggard and Chester Smith released a duet of the song on their country-gospel album California Blend.
