SR 6 is the only highway in Maine to terminate at the Canadian border at both ends. With a length of 207.23 miles (333.50 km), it is the third-longest state highway in Maine. Greenville is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,437 at the 2020 census. [2] The town is centered on the lower end of Moosehead Lake, the largest body of fresh water in the state. Greenville is the historic gateway to the north country and a center for outdoor recreation in the area.
In 1962 and 1963, the state transferred the highway to county control when US 2 was rerouted to follow the completed I-75 freeway. [8] [9] [10] With the transfer to local control, Mackinac Trail became a county road. Later, it was given the H-63 designation after October 5, 1970, as part of the County-Designated Highway System. [2]
Lily Bay State Park is a public recreation area in the town of Greenville, Piscataquis County, Maine. The state park occupies 924 acres (374 ha) on the southeast shore of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in New England. It was established in 1961 on woodland primarily donated by the Scott Paper Company in 1959. [3]
The number 11 dates back to 1922 when the New England road marking system was adopted, although Maine did not take part until 1925. New England Route 11 was known as the Manchester-Biddeford Route, as it began in Manchester, Vermont and ended in Biddeford, Maine. The Maine section of Route 11 ran for 29 miles (47 km).
