Manby Hot Spring, Rio Grande Gorge. Manby Hot Springs, also known as Stagecoach Hot Springs are thermal springs located near the town of Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico. [1] The springs discharge into three rock pools with sandy bottoms located near the ruins of an old bathhouse and a historical stagecoach stop.
The hot spring water emerges from a group of basalt boulders next to the Rio Grandé, and are accessible when the river is low.The spring water collections in several small, primitive rock-lined soaking pools.
The springs were used for centuries by local indigenous people for their healing properties. [3] According to legend, the hot springs were named "Montezuma" in 1846 when a group of General Stephen Watts Kearney's soldiers encountered Pecos Pueblo people who told them that the Mexican emperor Montezuma (though it is unclear which one), was raised at the hot springs.
The Las Vegas Hot Springs Company, controlled by the railroad, purchased the Montezuma hot springs property on August 1, 1879, and built a two-story stone bathhouse there for $17,000. [4] In February 1880, the company opened a three-story stone hotel with 75 rooms available for $4 per night.
The bridge is located about 3 miles (5 km) west of Arroyo Hondo on a gravel road that parallels the Rio Hondo. [1] The road, off NM 522, runs through Bureau of Land Management property and is known as John Dunn Bridge Road and County Road B-007.
