Lolo National Forest is a national forest located in western Montana, United States with the western boundary being the state of Idaho.The forest spans 2 million acres (8,000 km 2) and includes four wilderness areas; the Scapegoat and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness are partially within the forest while the Welcome Creek and Rattlesnake Wildernesses are solely in Lolo National Forest.

At an approximate elevation of 3,350 feet (1,020 m) above sea level, the site parallels the historic Lolo trail once used by the Nez Perce, Salish, and Kootenai tribes and Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark's westbound expedition ascended Lolo Creek in mid-September 1805, and they revisited the area on their way back east in late June 1806. [14]
Lolo is in south-central Missoula County, at the confluence of Lolo Creek and the Bitterroot River, a north-flowing tributary of the Clark Fork. The Bitterroot Mountains are to the west.
