Malcolm Donald Reid was born in Adelaide to John Harper Reid (c. 1829 – 25 September 1891) and Bridget Reid, née Carragher (died 1882), who married in 1852. John arrived in the colony of South Australia around 1849, possibly aboard Competitor in October 1848.
