In 1991 Plano ISD began a Chinese bilingual program for preschool and kindergarten students developed by Donna Lam. It is one of two Chinese bilingual programs in the State of Texas, along with the one established by the Austin Independent School District. Plano West was established in the fall of 1999 on the campus of the newly renovated Shepton High School. Plano West is accredited by the Texas Education Agency, done through its accreditation of Plano ISD. The school colors are royal blue, black, and white, and the mascot is the wolf, with the student body being known as "the wolf-pack."
