To create this Tree Charter, thousands of tree 'stories' were collected from people across the UK about what trees and woods mean to them. A tree story is any expression of what trees and woods mean to people. They can be a sentence or longer phrase, a photo, audio clip or video. The tree stories were collected until the end of February 2017. [9]
The Trust's first purchase was part of the Avon Valley Woods, near Kingsbridge, Devon. [9] By 1977 it had 22 woods in six counties. Langley Vale Wood is one of four First World War Centenary woods created by the Woodland Trust. It is located in Langley Vale, near Epsom, on the North Downs. The Woodland Trust altered the format in 2016, introducing an additional round of voting to name a single tree of the year for the whole country. The Woodland Trust monitors local wildlife, and found that many species' populations more than doubled between 2010 and 2016, as the forest expanded substantially.
