Moscot is an American luxury eyewear brand, headquartered in New York City, specializing in optical frames and sunglasses. It was founded in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan in 1915 by Hyman Moscot, and is one of the oldest local businesses in New York City, [1] as well as the 21st oldest eyewear company in the world still operating. [2]
The building is a 42-floor, 175.57 metres (576.0 ft), [1] International style skyscraper with an unadorned facade of brown aluminum and darkened black glass, and was designed by Emery Roth & Sons. Completed in 1974, [ 2 ] the skyscraper was built for the tableware, decorations and gift industries as a showcase and trade facility.
The company's first retail store was established in 1924 in New York City. The brand name "Cohen's Fashion Optical" was adopted by Jack Cohen in 1926. In 1927, Cohen started to sell a wide variety of eyewear from a pushcart in Orchard Street, New York. Cohen's is a franchise operated company since 1978. [1]
The map proved popular, and he began selling it, forming the Hagstrom Map Company in 1916. [5] He expanded coverage to all of Manhattan, then all of New York City, then its outlying regions, eventually offering over 100 maps.
