Torres Vedras (European Portuguese: [ˈtoʁɨʒ ˈvɛðɾɐʃ] ⓘ) is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Lisbon, approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of the capital Lisbon. It is a strong agricultural region thanks to its vineyards, and has an intense commercial and industrial life.
It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Torres Vedras (São Pedro e Santiago), Torres Vedras (Santa Maria do Castelo e São Miguel) and Matacães. [1] The population in 2011 was 25,717, [ 2 ] in an area of 62.44 km 2 .

The Municipal Museum of Torres Vedras was founded in 1929. It was initially installed in rooms attached to the church of St. Peter (S. Pedro), identifying itself as a “Museum of History, Archaeology and Prehistory”. In 1510, Torres Vedras received a municipal charter (Foral), and six years later King Manuel I, ordered reconstruction of the castle. Around 1520, the Palace of the Alcaides was constructed by the Chief Magistrate, João Soares de Alarcão. It remains the dominant feature of the castle, despite being in ruins.
