Matthews, who grew up in Hanley , was an apprentice at the club and made his first appearance in March 1932, [ 18 ] against Bury , at the age of 17. [ 19 ]
Stoke City Football Club has its origins in Stoke Ramblers, a team formed by former pupils of the Charterhouse School whilst they were apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway.
