The Water Authority was formed in 1944 by the California State Legislature. SDCWA serves 24 member agencies with 36 Board of Director members. [1] In addition to local water sources, water is imported from the Colorado River and the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta through the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
In 1954 the Poway Municipal Water District was established to utilize water from the Colorado River Aqueduct. In 1957, following the sewer system 's completion, developers built housing tracts. It became a city on December 1, 1980. [ 16 ]
The dam is owned by the City of Poway and was constructed between 1970 and 1972 with the purpose of storing and supplying water, and providing recreational facilities to the community. A $3.2-million bond issue for construction of the dam was rejected by voters in 1964 and 1966, but passed with 87 percent in favor in 1969.
