SVG help. Scalable Vector Graphics is a commonly used file format for providing a geometrical description of an image using basic objects such as labels, circles, lines, curves and polygons. An image can be reduced or enlarged to an arbitrary size, and will not suffer image data loss, nor will it become pixelated.

You can do this in inkscape too, using save as "plain SVG". If you save a file as plain SVG and re-open it in inkscape, some of the more advanced "features" may have disappeared. A good example would be the 3D box tool - if you make a 3D box in inkscape, then save it as plain SVG the 3D box is no longer a 3D box, but becomes a a group of paths.

As far as filesize goes, Inkscape will layout your SVG in a neat, human readable manner as well as including lots of inkscape metadata. By exporting to plain SVG, rather than inkscape SVG, the metadata will not be written to the file, and you will obtain a reduced filesize, however the neat layout is maintained regardless.
Whilst it is a comparatively simple task to convert a SVG to a PNG (librsvg does this all the time), the reverse conversion is difficult. If you want to alter the colours in an existing SVG, edit that using either an application which knows about SVG - such as InkScape - or use a plain text editor like MS WordPad or MS Notepad.
