The city is the largest south of the 46th parallel south and the most populous southernmost city in Chile and the Americas. Due to its location, it is also the coldest coastal city with more than 100,000 inhabitants in Latin America. Punta Arenas is one of the world's most southerly ports and serves as an Antarctic gateway city.

The station is the largest community in Antarctica, capable of supporting up to 1,500 residents, [1] [3] though the population fluctuates seasonally; during the antarctic night, there are less than two hundred people. It serves as one of three year-round United States Antarctic science facilities.
In addition to being an administrative center, it is a light industrial port and tourist destination. Ushuaia is located roughly 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) from the Antarctic Peninsula and is one of five internationally recognized Antarctic gateway cities; it is the only South American city with that status besides Chile's Punta Arenas.
