The Backyardigans originated as a live-action pilot episode titled "Me and My Friends", filmed at Nickelodeon Studios Florida and completed in September 1998. The characters were played by full-body puppets on an indoor stage. The pilot was rejected by Nickelodeon, and Burgess decided to rework the concept into an animated series.

Janice Burgess (March 1, 1952 – March 2, 2024) [1] was an American television executive, screenwriter and producer for Nickelodeon. [2] She created the Nick Jr. series The Backyardigans and worked as a writer and story editor for Nickelodeon's revival of Winx Club.
He starred as Chip in the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast before starring as a boy in Fiddler on the Roof.In 2004, he landed on two voice roles in children's television — Spencer Piggle in Whoopi's Littleburg and as the singing voice of Pablo on The Backyardigans, both which aired on the Nick Jr. programming block.

Jonah Bobo (born January 24, 1997 [1]) is an American musician and former child actor.He is best known for his roles as Danny Budwing in the 2005 film Zathura: A Space Adventure, Robbie Weaver in the 2011 film Crazy, Stupid, Love, and the voice of Austin the Kangaroo on Nickelodeon's animated television series The Backyardigans.
