Production of the Churchill crown began on 11 October 1965, and stopped in the summer of 1966. The crown coin was nicknamed the dollar. In 1940, an agreement with the US pegged the Pound sterling to the US dollar at a rate of £1 = US$4.03. It also reduced the silver content of the half dollar from 90 percent to 40 percent; silver in the half dollar was subsequently eliminated by a 1970 law.
The silver-colored Susan B. Anthony dollar was replaced with gold-colored Sacagawea dollar in 2000 and Presidential Dollars 2007-2016; though the composition changed, the coin's size and weight remain the same. Some variances in coin size and weight occurred over time, especially as the value of silver varied.
As a way of honoring more presidents, the U.S. Mint began issuing Presidential Dollar coins in the 2000s. Most are worth about face value, but a couple are valued in six figures due to errors.
