Colonial Gardens is a restaurant complex and local landmark located in the Kenwood Hill neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, across New Cut Road from Iroquois Park. It was formerly an entertainment complex, and in its earliest existence, a part of Senning's Park, the site of the first zoo in Louisville. [1]
The hotel formerly had a historic restaurant called the Oakroom, which was Kentucky's only AAA Five Diamond Restaurant Award winner, one of 44 in the nation. [35] It closed in 2018 and was converted to a ballroom. [36] The Rathskellar, decorated with Rookwood Pottery, was a rare and distinctively Seelbach south-German influenced restaurant. [34]
The neighborhood was initially a wealthy suburb of Louisville. A tornado on March 27, 1890 devastated Parkland, and Parkland was annexed by Louisville in 1894. A community of freed black migrants formed shortly after the Emancipation in the lower-lying area of the neighborhood, originally called Needmore, coming to be known as Little Africa.
