The Eiffel Tower (/ ˈ aɪ f əl / ⓘ EYE-fəl; French: Tour Eiffel [tuʁ ɛfɛl] ⓘ) is a wrought-iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel , whose company designed and built the tower from 1887 to 1889.
The Eiffel Tower and Other Mythologies is a collection of essays by the French literary theorist Roland Barthes. [1] It is a companion volume to his earlier book, Mythologies , and follows the same format of a series of short essays which explore a range of cultural phenomena, from the Tour de France to laundry detergents.
The engraving was painted over at the beginning of the 20th century and restored in 1986–87 by Société Nouvelle d'exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, the company that the city of Paris contracts to operate the Tower. The repainting of 2010–11 restored the letters to their original gold colour.
Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born in France, in the Côte-d'Or, the first child of Catherine-Mélanie (née Moneuse) and Alexandre Bonickhausen dit Eiffel. [6] He was a descendant of Marguerite Frédérique (née Lideriz) and Jean-René Bönickhausen, who had emigrated from the German town of Marmagen and settled in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. [7]
It is situated on the left bank of the Pont de Bir-Hakeim over the Seine and is the closest station to the Eiffel Tower. After being built in 1906 as "Grenelle", it was renamed together with the bridge to commemorate the World War II battle of Bir Hakeim. The signs on the station walls now say "Bir-Hakeim — Tour Eiffel".
