Sweetness in the Belly is a 2019 drama film directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, based on the novel of the same name by Camilla Gibb. It had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival .
Zeresenay Berhane Mehari (born 1974), is an Ethiopian filmmaker. [1] He is notable as the director of critically acclaimed films Difret and Sweetness in the Belly. [2]Apart from cinema, he is the co-founder and Head of Original Content for Kana Television, the number-one rated free-to-air, private satellite entertainment TV channel in Ethiopia.
Gibb's third novel, Sweetness in the Belly (2005), is set against the backdrop of the Ethiopian Revolution and largely takes place in the ancient walled city of Harar. It was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2005, longlisted for the Dublin IMPAC Award and won the Trillium Award for best book in Ontario in 2006.
