Hino Motors, Ltd., commonly known as Hino, is a Japanese manufacturer of commercial vehicles and diesel engines (including those for trucks, buses and other vehicles) headquartered in Hino, Tokyo.
The ancestor of Detroit Diesel was the Winton Engine Company, founded by Alexander Winton in 1912; Winton Engine began producing diesel engines in fall 1913. After Charles F. Kettering purchased two Winton diesels for his yacht, General Motors acquired the company in 1930 along with Electro Motive Company, Winton's primary client.

The 6.2L diesel emerged as a high-fuel-economy alternative to the V8 gasoline engine lineup, and achieved better mileage than Chevrolet's 4.3L V6 gasoline engine of the 1980s, at a time when the market was focused on power rather than efficiency.
