Puerto Lempira or Auhya Yari is the Miskito capital of the Gracias a Dios department in northeastern Honduras, located on the shores of the Caratasca Lagoon. Though it does not have paved roads, it is the largest town in the La Mosquitia region.

Mocorón is a remote village in the Puerto Lempira municipality of the Gracias a Dios Department in northeastern Honduras. It is located near the confluence of the Mocorón River and the Rio Dursuna stream. The Mocorón Airport is nearby. In 1981 the village became a refugee camp for Miskito refugees from Nicaragua. Lempira is a rugged department, and it is relatively isolated from the rest of the country. The highest mountain peak in Honduras, Cerro las Minas , is in Lempira. The department was named after Lempira , a local chieftain of the Lenca people who fought against the Spanish conquistadores in the early 16th century.
Municipalities are the only administrative division in Honduras that possess local government. Each municipality has its own elected mayor as opposed to the appointed governors of departments. For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into 3731 aldeas , and those into 27969 caserios . [ 1 ]
The Nakunta River is a river in the Gracias a Dios Department of Honduras that exits into the Caratasca Lagoon [1] a few miles south of Puerto Lempira. It is 115 kilometers (71 mi) in length. [2] The river starts in the La Mosquitia region of the Department and is famous locally for its abundance of lizards. [3]
