Kurunegala is a district in North Western Province, Sri Lanka. The district is 4,812.7 km 2 (1,858.2 sq mi). It consists of thirty divisional secretariats, 1,610 grama niladari divisions and 4,476 villages.
Kurunegala (Sinhala: කුරුණෑගල, Tamil: குருணாகல்) is a major city in Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of the North Western Province and the Kurunegala District. Kurunegala was an ancient royal capital for 50 years, from the end of the 13th century to the start of the 14th century.
The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Kurunegala in the North Western province. The district currently elects 15 of the 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament and had 1,183,649 registered electors in 2010. [2] The district is Sri Lanka's Electorate Number 15. [4]
Kurunegala is the largest city in the province and serves as a major commercial and administrative hub. Puttalam, located on the western coast, is known for its lagoon and salt production. The region has numerous archaeological sites, including the ancient rock fortress of Yapahuwa and the Panduwasnuwara ruins.

Alawwa is a town and divisional secretariat of the Kurunegala District in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. The town is considered part of the Coconut Triangle, where most of the country's coconut exports come from. [2] The population was 63,667 according to the 2012 Sri Lankan census. [3]
