In line with the IDI diesel, the Power Stroke was offered in three-quarter-ton and larger versions of the Ford F-Series and Econoline product ranges. The Power Stroke is an electronically controlled, direct injection engine with a 4.11 in × 4.18 in (104.4 mm × 106.2 mm) bore and stroke creating a displacement of 444 cu in (7.3 L).
In total, nearly 2 million 7.3L Power Stroke V8s were manufactured for Ford at Navistar's Indianapolis, Indiana, plant before switching to the 6.0L. The T444E used a 4.11 in × 4.18 in (104.4 mm × 106.2 mm) bore and stroke. Power output was 210 hp (157 kW) at 3000 rpm and 425 lb⋅ft (576 N⋅m) at 1600 rpm for 1994-1997.
[1] [3] The engine, first introduced with a displacement of 7.3L was first used with Ford Super Duty trucks starting with the 2020 model year and was later added to the Ford E-Series for the 2021 model year. [3] [4] It is also available as a crate engine. [5] A smaller displacement 6.8L was introduced in 2023.
The engine was built in two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 L), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 until 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 L), which was used in Ford trucks from 1988 until 1994 (naturally aspirated) and in 1993 and 1994 (turbocharged).
These engines were used by IHC for some heavy-duty applications until 1935, although their own large engines (525 cu in (8.6 L) FBD and 648 cu in (10.6 L) FEB) had appeared in 1932. [6] The medium-duty 1930 A-series trucks received the all-new 278.7 cu in (4.6 L) FB-3 six-cylinder engine, with overhead valves and seven main bearings .
On 350-series vans, a 7.5L V8 and 7.3L Navistar diesel V8 were also optional; the diesel became turbocharged in 1993. For 1995, the IDI diesel was replaced by a 7.3L Ford Power Stroke diesel V8 (also sourced from Navistar). For 1997, the E-Series underwent a revision of its engine lineup, retaining only the 7.3L diesel.
