From 1947 to 1952, Gubbrud served as chairman of Elmwood School. In 1948, he was the Lincoln County delegate to the South Dakota state Republican convention. In 1950, Gubbrud was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives. In 1951, he won the Mississippi Valley Association Soil Conservation Award for South Dakota.
In 1950, he entered South Dakota State College (now South Dakota State University, SDSU), where he starred in track and field and football for two years, setting 16 school records in the 1951-52 and 1952-53 seasons. [2] In both football seasons he was selected to the All-North Central Conference (NCC) team.
